Research at Luke

In January 2021, ARCTAQUA partners at the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) initiated an experiment with European whitefish to develop markers for genomic selection; for application in the national breeding programme. A team consisting of Marko Svärd (in the photo), Miika Raitakivi and Juha-Pekka Turkka has recorded fish body weight and length, collected tissue samples and tagged 1500 fish at Enonkoski fish farm. In genomic selection, tens of thousands of DNA markers are analysed from tissue samples of individuals to predict the genetic potential of parents to transfer preferred fish traits to progeny.
