Description:
The Faculty of Education and Arts at Nord University, Norway and the Faculty of Education at Queen’s University, Canada, in cooperation with local schools in the Nordland, Trøndelag, and Ontario regions, have joined to establish The CANOPY Project. Supported by funding from the Norwegian Agency for International Cooperation and Quality Enhancement in Higher Education (DIKU), this partnership aims to address, from a holistic and international perspective, the most pressing issues currently facing the education sector to better prepare the next generation of teachers. Connecting educational research, classroom experience, student mobility, and institutional management, CANOPY will develop global competencies in pedagogy, research, and training through international collaboration.
Innovation and Inclusion are the guiding principles of CANOPY, and the initiatives of each year of the project will focus on a different priority area comprehended by these principles:
2020: Educational Leadership
2021: Digital Innovation and Educational Technology
2022: Indigenous Studies, Diversity, and Inclusion
2023: Exceptional Learners
At the core of this project is the short-term mobility of the CANOPY Partner Group (CPG). This group will consist of an annually-rotating 14-member collective, with Canada and Norway each represented by 7 members per year, including:

- 1 representative from university leadership
- 2 university academic staff
- 1 local school teacher or leader
- 3 teacher education students

Activities:
The CPG will meet twice in 2020:

- In Canada, at Queen’s University (Kingston) from 11-16 January 2020 (with travel time, 10-17 January)
- In Norway, at Nord University (Bodø) from 4-9 May 2020 (note: MAGLU/GLU students are not required to attend tours on 8-9 May)

Each meeting will be split into three sections (2 days each):

- Attendance at a larger education conference; in Canada this will be the Queen’s Conference on Education (QCE) and in Norway it will be the Nord MAGLU Conference (NMC).

- Participation in the concentrated CANOPY Partnership Seminar. This seminar will allow for the fourteen members to meet, engage in, and lead a variety of whole-group and smaller sessions on the annual topic. Such sessions may include (but are not limited to): thematic discussions; research presentations; lesson plans; syllabi or programme development; tool, method, or module demonstrations; policy review; or ethical consultations.

- Excursions for relevant events, meetings, and tours with either the partner university, adjacent institutes, regional organizations, local schools, or the broader community (for the visiting group).

Particulars:

- Three MAGLU/GLU students will be selected in 2020.
- Flight tickets, accommodations, and food will be covered for the trip to/from Canada (as budgeted).
- The Faculty of Education and Arts will attest a certificate of confirmation for students participating in the project.
- Students will be provided permissions for any class absences during the project events.
- Participating students will be listed as official members of the CANOPY Project Team and will be featured in promotional materials.
- There are no credits/ECTS linked with this participation, but such activities are immensely valuable experience, especially at such an early stage of study.

Eligibility:
To qualify for this program, students must:

- Be enrolled in the MAGLU program at Nord University (all kull/årsklasse are eligible)
- Possess suitable English skills (a minimum level of 4 in English from upper secondary school, or equivalent training).
- Commit to attending the two CANOPY meetings:
- in Canada, 10-17 January 2020
- in Norway, 4-7 May 2020
- Submit an application, according to the instructions below, no later than 14:00 on 4 October 2019

Instructions:
If you meet the eligibility criteria above, you may submit an application for one of three student spots in the 2020 CANOPY Partner Group (CPG) — joining experienced leaders, researchers, professors, teachers, and principals in the education sector.
To apply, write a letter of motivation in English (max. 1 A4-page, Times New Roman, 14 pt font) explaining why you would like to participate in the project. You are free to formulate the letter as you wish but you must address the following questions:

Long-Term Mobility: Student Exchange Group (SEG)

Description:
In order to promote international collaboration and to provide students with increased opportunities for developing global competencies and dynamic language skills, CANOPY has established an exchange partnership between the Faculty of Education and Arts at Nord University and the Faculty of Education Queen’s University. This long-term mobility scheme will enable teacher-education students from Norway to more fully immerse in the Canadian educational environment and to acquire an international perspective on teaching and learning that extends beyond their typical experience within local guidelines and curricula. Practicum placements, in particular, will help MAGLU students cultivate intercultural awareness, craft self-reflexive pedagogy, and assemble a broader network of colleagues and mentors.

Particulars:

- 1 MAGLU student (either 1-7 or 5-10) will be selected for the Fall semester exchange in 2020.
- Enrollment will provide an equivalent of 30 ECTS course credits in either:
- Exchange students will have an opportunity to be placed for up to 6 weeks of practicum (praksis) in a local Ontario school, which will be officially recognized by FLU.
- Beyond the funding available through Lånekassen, students on exchange to Queen’s University will receive from the CANOPY project an additional 3.450,- kr per month (for four months) to assist with expenses.

- Be enrolled in the second year of the MAGLU program at Nord University at the time of application (starting their third year, when they go on exchange)
- Possess suitable English skills (a minimum level of 4 in English from upper secondary school, or equivalent training).
